Energy suppliers could be sending incorrect energy bills to as many as three in every ten customers.

According to price comparison website uSwitch.com, energy suppliers are the worst offenders for sending the wrong bills to consumers, beating banks, councils and other utility suppliers.

Energy suppliers tend to overestimate companies' business energy usage, including the amount of business electricity and gas that they use.

On average, it take two months for any energy bill queries to be resolved too, the research found.

Less than half of all business electricity bills are based on actual meter readings by energy suppliers and only 28 per cent of business gas bills are completely accurate.

Following a discrepancy with an energy bill, the average amount owed is £153, which is £11 or eight per cent higher than the average last year.

British Gas launched a new service for its business users at the end of last month, which is meant to make it easier for firms to calculate their business energy usage through more transparent billing.
